Are You Prioritizing Sleep?

Ever heard the phrase, “Sleep is for the weak?Gag.

We’ve been taught the most important parts of our day are prioritizing all of the tasks on our daily to-do list and giving them the better part of our energy, followed by showing up for others, even when we feel like we need a break. While there’s no doubt that you need to show up for your commitments, the concept that your busy schedule should own your lifestyle isn’t true, or healthy.

It’s easy to overlook the importance of a good night's sleep. We often prioritize work, social commitments, and other responsibilities over our own well-being, neglecting our body’s need for quality sleep. However, prioritizing sleep is essential for maintaining our physical, mental, and emotional health.

Understanding the Importance of Sleep

When you power down, you allow the systems in your body to charge up. On the mental side, sleeping allows our brains to consolidate memories, process emotions, and recharge our cognitive abilities, which allows for our mood and alertness to reset. Physically, sleeping helps to support our immune system, balance hormones, and promote overall physical well-being. Sleep also contributes to factors like weight control, muscle recovery, and blood sugar regulation.

Consequences of Sleep Deprivation

None of your fitness and wellness goals are possible without consistent, adequate sleep. Adults should be shooting for anywhere between 7-9 hours of sleep every night. Continuously depriving yourself of sleep has severe consequences for your health and wellness.

Lack of sleep can lead to increased stress levels, impaired cognitive function, decreased productivity, weakened immune system, and even an elevated risk of chronic conditions such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.

Establishing a Bedtime Ritual

Creating a consistent bedtime routine can greatly contribute to better sleep quality. Start by establishing a regular sleep schedule, going to bed, and waking up at the same time each day, even on weekends. Engage in calming activities before bed, such as reading, practicing meditation or deep breathing exercises, and avoiding electronic screens that emit blue light. A soothing bedtime routine helps signal your body and mind that it's time to unwind and prepare for rest.

Wind Down Before Bedtime

Try not to go from 0-100 when you’re ready to go to sleep. Winding down before you’re ready to head to bed can significantly boost your sleep quality. Stress and anxiety are known for disrupting sleep patterns, which is why having a self-care ritual that helps you manage your stress levels can improve sleep. Prioritize mindfulness activities like journaling or meditation before bed. You can also lean into wellness products like CBD, which is known for helping to reduce stress + anxiety while supporting relaxation and better sleep patterns.

Set the Mood

Your sleep environment plays a significant role in the quality of your sleep. Make sure that your bedroom has vibes that feel tranquil instead of borderline chaotic. Most people don’t have a brand-new mattress accounted for in their monthly budget, but you can start small by making sure that your space is cool and dark at bedtime.

Stop Scrolling

Technology makes it challenging to disconnect and unwind before bed. The blue light emitted by screens can interfere with our sleep quality by suppressing melatonin production. Try to power down your phone and stop scrolling an hour before bed. In that hour, you can try to incorporate wellness habits that promote a better night’s sleep.
