A Well Body and a Well Baby: With or Without CBD.

Oh, baby. Look at you! You’re pregnant, and that “glow” that you used to get from leg day at the gym or maybe an Onyx + Rose Bath Bomb wind-down at night is now replaced by this other glow people are always telling you that you have (but that you may not always feel.)

Even more than before, it feels like everything you put in your body is a super big deal. So, if you’re a fan of CBD products, we’re sure you have questions. But before all that, this.

Dr. Peter Swanz, ND is a naturopathic doctor with a particular passion for self-healing and solutions to medical issues that are grounded in both nature and an understanding of the “whole person” approach. He’s an advisor for Onyx + Rose, and we asked him for his opinions on the matter, and here’s what he had to say about it.

Mama’s Must Do’s

Take Your Vitamins

A high-quality prenatal vitamin is a mandatory supplement for an expecting mom. Folic acid is a key component in prenatal vitamins and is a required nutrient to prevent neural tube defects in developing babies.

Catch of the Day? Fish Oil with DHA and EPA

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential to our health and cannot be produced in the body. The body converts them to EPA and DHA, which is particularly good at optimizing neurological development in infants. Pregnant or breastfeeding? You should be supplementing with a high-quality fish oil providing at least 500 to 1000 mg of DHA daily.

Get Lots of Quality Protein. Because You Are Literally “Body Building.”

Consuming adequate amounts of protein is imperative for a baby’s development. It’s a literal building block for them. Aim for 75 to 100 mg of protein daily throughout the pregnancy. Adequate protein supports healthy blood sugar and blood pressure values and bonus:  It might just reduce morning sickness.

CBD and Pregnancy:  What we know and what we don’t.

The truth is that there just hasn’t been enough clinical research done for us to state that CBD is 100% safe to take while you’re pregnant. In fact, there currently aren’t any studies that support the use of CBD during pregnancy.

That’s because until recently, most of the limited research has been done on marijuana use while pregnant, focusing most specifically on the impact of THC on a developing fetus — which, as you know, is present in Full Bloom Onyx + Rose products.

The lack of research is unfortunate because what we do know is that many of the unpleasant symptoms pregnant women experience, like nausea, discomfort, and inflammation, are directly impacted by the endocannabinoid system. Some researchers believe that the endocannabinoid system (your system of natural CBD receptors) is also essential in fertilization, in fetal development, and in the growth of a new baby.

The Short Answer:

First of all, it’s important to remember that, if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, what goes in you, goes in little “Apple” or “Leaf” or “Blue Ivy.” Make sure you’ve got a solid nutritional foundation of vitamins, fatty acids, and protein.

As for CBD, that’s a decision and conversation best left to you and your doctor. A lot of people have experienced CBD’s benefits and, should you decide to pass, it may be an option for your non-nursing partner to sleep through the night and wake up ready for this amazing journey you’re going on.

If we can help with any questions, get at us here. Even during that late-night feeding.

Congrats!
